As an aspiring primary care physician, as well as an advocate and supporter of primary care practice, this experience was golden to me. Not only do you gain hands-on clinical experience with patients by taking their vitals and histories, you also get to know about the US healthcare system and its differences from the Korean system. By observing Dr. Kim's encounters with patients and calling patients on their labs and counseling them, you can learn the assessment and planning part as well, which I find most educational and rewarding. This internship is truly a complete package of what you could expect from primary care USCE. Plus, you could get tons of valuable information regarding match and residency life from Dr. Kim and make friends with the clinic staff, not to mention enjoy its proximity to New York City in your free time. I really enjoyed my time there, and I appreciate Dr. Kim for providing me with this opportunity. (Internship 3/2023)

I absolutely loved my 6-week internship at Joy Internal Medicine! It was an incredible experience where I got to immerse myself in all aspects of patient care. During the internship, I had the opportunity to take vital signs, conduct EKG and urine dipstick examinations, and even call patients to discuss their lab results. One thing that really stood out to me was the diverse patient population that I was able to interact with. Not only did I get to work with Korean patients, but I also had the chance to practice my English communication skills with a range of English-speaking patients. Shadowing Dr. Ann was truly inspiring, and I learned so much from her approach to caring for chronic hypertension and diabetic patients. I was impressed by how she set concrete goals for her patients and followed through to help them make significant lifestyle changes. Overall, I had an amazing experience and met some wonderful people through this internship. I am so grateful to Dr. Ann for giving me this opportunity, and I would highly recommend this internship to any medical students applying for residency in the US!

Although it was a short 4-week-long journey working and observing as an intern at Joy Internal Medicine, I was lucky enough to have various hands-on experiences including history taking, doing physical exams, patient assessment, and establishing treatment plans. You will also have opportunities to assess lab results and inform the patients in English, through which you can naturally pick up medical English expressions and communication skills. I would like to recommend the internship be your first step to be a doctor in the US. Thank you to Dr. Ann for giving us tremendous opportunities, and I was moved by how she builds solid rapport with patients. With no doubt, I believe what I’ve learned here at Joy Internal Medicine will help me become a good doctor in the US! (Internship 2/2023)

(Internship 7/2022)

With all the USCE opportunities closing due to the pandemic, I was relieved to find an opportunity here at Joy Internal Medicine. Even though there are many things that I did, I loved that I could observe how Dr. Ann sees her patients. I never had any USCE before, so I was really surprised how Dr. Ann took her time to intimately talk with the patient about their health. I was able to see that the primary care’s role was not just in curing diseases but also modifying the patient's lifestyle for their general health. Dr. Ann even went further to teach me about the US healthcare system including how the insurance system and billing works in the US. I believe that you could never witness how these work from other USCEs. Through this internship, I was able to have an overview of the US healthcare system and primary care. I really miss all the heartwarming environment by Dr. Ann and other staffs and hope that other doctors or students would be able to get the same experience as me. (Internship 1/2022)

As an IMG applicant, It was not easy to earn great clinical experience in the US clinics/hospitals. The current COVID pandemic even made it worse for us. However, Dr. Kim readily invited me to her clinics as soon as I applied through this website. I was so lucky to learn how a Primary Care Physician treats each patient while observing Dr. Kim's practice right next to her. Discussing the management plans with Dr. Kim helped build my clinical knowledge up to date as well.
I could participate in various tasks including Histories, Vitals, Consultations, EKGs, and Vaccination under Dr. Kim's guidance. I felt that I was well trained at the end of the rotation.
In addition, It was also helpful to get a glimpse of the US healthcare and insurance system as an IMG. I would highly recommend the Joy internship to anyone interested in residency in the US to achieve your goal! (Internship 8/2021 from Korea)

It is a nice opportunity if you want to gain experience in the private clinical field. You can do almost everything in this clinic from simple procedures like injections to taking histories from the patients. I recommend the internship to gain an impression of what a doctor's life is in a private clinic.

I had a great learning experience during my 3-week internship at Joy Internal Medicine. This experience showed me the way of primary care clinic works and I learned that the primary care setting was a gateway to understanding the medical practice in the US because it covered the fundamental basics of quality preventative care.
Dr. Kim always allowed me to learned clinical skills about how to communicate and consult with patients and sometimes I was given opportunity to see and examine patients on my own followed by a review of notes. In addition to that, the internship gave me the chance to learn and perform EKGs, IM vaccinations and urine dipstick tests.
Dr. Kim and the entire staffs in the clinic are very nice and supportive and the working environment is excellent. I really enjoyed the internship and definitely recommend that to other person who need clinical experience in the US.

The 3 weeks of internship experience in Joy’s clinic was a perfect opportunity to get a sense of what primary care practice in the U.S looks like. I was given an ample opportunity to interact with patients of diverse backgrounds doing detailed history taking, checking vitals, organizing patient charts, doing follow-up calls and observing Dr. Ann’s patient encounters. Dr. Ann and all the other staff members are very welcoming and supportive. I also had a chance to perform tests and procedures like EKGs, Urine dipsticks IM, SQ vaccinations.
This internship was immensely helpful for me to shape my future as an internist practicing in the U.S. So I strongly recommend this program for all of those who pursue a medical career in the U.S. and would like to express my gratitude once again to Dr. Ann for offering me such a great opportunity.

I am glad that I was able to experience the primary care setting and the American medical system through Joy Internal Medicine. During my four weeks I was able to meet and take history of a variety of patients with differing needs and perform various medical exams. Being able to partake and observe Dr. Kim interact with her patients was very educational as well. Throughout medical school we were mostly exposed to inpatient interactions and it was refreshing to learn at an outpatient setting. On top of that, it was evident through her bedside manners that Dr. Kim is truly invested in every one of her patients’ well-being. I was able experience the behind-the-scenes aspect of primary care as well, being able to take part in meetings.
Through the experience I also made invaluable friends with other interns, and the staff working at Joy Internal Medicine. I am glad to have been a part of Joy Internal Medicine, and I am truly grateful for the experience. (Internship April 2021)

Working as an intern under Dr. Ann at Joy Internal Medicine allowed me to experience firsthand the broad role that primary care plays in a patient’s everyday life. Lifestyle modification, the start of medication, and ongoing follow-up mean that the primary care physician’s work is extremely patient-oriented, and has a direct, detailed impact on the patient’s quality of life. My participation in Dr. Ann’s patient encounters showed me the thorough and personal approach which I would like to take in the future. Dr. Ann and staffs allowed me to learn clinical skills one by one with tips and details. In addition to affording me the opportunity to learn and perform vaccinations, IV fluids, EKGs, PFTs, and urine dipstick tests, my internship also gave me the chance to perform telemedicine consultations with patients. Joy internal medicine staffs are incredible and friendly like a family. With great teamwork, Dr.Ann, the staffs, and including myself were able to manage a high volume of patients in an efficient way. I felt very lucky I could spend my last month of medical school here, it was a valuable experience for connecting textbooks and real patients in primary care. (Intern January-February 2021)

It was an absolute pleasure interning at Joy Internal Medicine. Not only did I learn many crucial skills such as taking vitals and performing ECGs, but I also developed skills that will continue to help me thrive as I further my education and professional career in the medical field. Interning at Joy Internal Medicine was the stepping stone I needed to become a medical assistant and now, a graduate student aspiring to become a physician assistant. I will always be grateful for the valuable experience!

I wanted to do one of my electives at Joy Internal Medicine clinic because I wanted to be exposed to more Korean patients and this clinic gave me full experiences and I really loved this rotation. Mainly, I took chief complaints from patients and see patients with Dr. Kim after. Also sometimes, I gave vaccine shots to patients and checked patients' vitals as well.

"Working at Joy internal was a great experience. It is an optimal opportunity to gain exposure to comprehensive primary care for various patients. You will learn techniques that are ubiquitously used such as injections, electrocardiograms, urine toxicology, and lab readings. As an intern you become an integral member of the team and get comfortable actively participating in patient care. The internship helps you refine your history taking, communication skills, and grasp of the general plan of care for common pathologies such as diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Kim has been a great mentor and she is extremely supportive both with clinical knowledge as well as applications. The staff is very welcoming and I felt very much part of the family during the month I interned. I will surely miss working at Joy internal and I would encourage others to pursue the same positive experience I had here!
